Wellness Wednesday Encouragement- Decluttering

When I think of wellness, I think in very holistic terms. I say that because the topic I’ve chosen for this week’s Wellness Wednesday may not seem related to health at all. I am far from a minimalist and my house is far from being a show home for organisation. I have experienced the significant difference to my headspace that decluttering and reducing the amount of “stuff” in my house has made.

There is something so freeing in releasing excess. Our minds gain space when our eyes are not constantly seeing clutter. My time is impacted too. Having less clothing in my cupboard or fewer plastic containers to dig through makes the simple everyday tasks quicker and more streamlined. It may only be seconds or minutes but this seems to add up. Maybe it is simply the lower frustration levels that make the difference!

Decluttering is of course only one part of the equation. If organisation systems and purchasing habits don’t change, the same issue recurs time and again. I’m working on these for myself but change doesn’t happen overnight! Maybe this is the part of the process that you need to make changes in too.

There are a few people and resources that have inspired me, given me ideas to try and encouraged me to try again when my house has returned to the overflowing mess once again.

  • Clutterbug YouTube– I love that she is not a naturally organised person and is so relatable. She gives really practical strategies that can work for families.

  • The Lazy Genius– I think it is again her relatability and authenticity that draws me in. She is simply a mum working at making life more simple and manageable.
  • Lisa Corduff- she doesn’t just give the usual strategies that you hear time and again. She looks at the whole picture, including headspace, which I love.

My home will never be perfect. There are other family members that I need to respect and take into consideration when making changes or decisions to get rid of something. I am focusing on making little step by step changes. Maybe you have tried decluttering before and feel that you have failed. Maybe it seems too overwhelming to even start. Can I encourage you to think about one thing you could try this week and see what difference it could make?

This post is part of a series for Write 31 Days called “For Your Encouragement.” I am taking requests from readers on what they want encouragement about and responding to the best of my ability. I would love to hear from you.
