• Distraction addiction- pressing in over numbing out

An audio version of this blog post is available here: https://jokoepke.substack.com/ Does anyone else battle with distraction addiction? Or is it just me? So often I realise at the end of the day that precious hours have been sucked away by distraction. The frustration at myself builds and I try many strategies to deal with this, with varying degrees of success. It’s easy to blame my phone and technology. I have admitted my phone addiction before and even speak on overcoming it for groups, such as MOPS. Phones and technology are certainly designed to be addictive and distract us from other things we could be choosing to do. They need…

  • Capacity blocker: technology

I’m going to be upfront from the start and admit that I have been dreading writing this post. Mostly because I really don’t want to take the honest look at myself and how little I have progressed in allowing God to remove this blocker from my life. A little over a year ago during last year’s Write 31 Days challenge, I wrote a post called “Confessions of a phone addict”. By the interest it generated, I guess there are others out there who relate to this. A year on and I am still struggling with this. If anything, it’s gotten more complicated as other technologies have been added in for…

  • Day 12: Church and another look at phone addiction

My three year old has been melting my heart recently by asking me to pray for the church whenever it is our prayer time. It was great to be with my church family this morning, even if my strength was not quite where I want it to be. You may have seen my post on my battle with getting my phone use into balance again (Read it here.) This week I found this video…

  • Day 3: Confessions of a phone addict

You know that mask we wear? The one that we wear because we’re convinced that if people saw into the real us- our thoughts and hidden behaviours, they might be horrified. Maybe it is just me? Today I am choosing to let mine slip a little. I have realised that a major barrier to being more intentional with my time, more present with my daughter and increasing my prayer time is the amount of time I spend on my phone. Smart phones have allowed some incredible new uses but, for me, it comes with a price tag. I have been forced to admit that I have become addicted to it.…
